'The scenery throughout from Durban to Pieter Maritzburg is interesting and in some places is very beautiful.'

ANTHONY TROLLOPE, South Africa (1878)

Northeast Region

This region includes a variety of landscapes: hundreds of kilometres of subtropical coastline, the rolling hills of the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, the Drakensberg and Soutpansberg mountains, and the open savannah of eastern Mpumalanga. The diversity of the landscape is matched by the diversity of its peoples: Zulu, Ndebele, Venda, Tsonga, English- and Afrikaans-speaking whites, and a sizeable Indian population, mainly in KwaZulu-Natal. The chief urban centres are Durban, Pietermaritzburg, Nelspruit and Pholokwane (formerly Pietersburg).

The glory of the region is its outstanding national parks. Visitors flock to the Kruger National Park in the hope of seeing Africa's Big Five, and to the Blyde River Canyon for its breathtaking views. Black and white rhino are the main attraction of the Hluhluwe-Umfolozi park, while hippo, pelican and flamingo draw nature-lovers to the Greater St Lucia Wetland, declared a World Heritage Site in 1999.
